Should You Buy the 3LCD Epson Home Cinema 640?

Epson Home Cinema 640 - But it or Not?When it comes to home theater projectors that perform well and offer great value, Epson is at the top of the list. The Epson Home Cinema 640 is no different.

Both the white and color brightness of this model are 3200 lumens, which provides a bright and vibrant image (up to 3x that of competitors!).

This means that you can enjoy watching movies or videos during the day as well as evening.

Unless you are going super-cheap (ie the iDG-787 for $100), I think that this is a great feature to have.

This is because it doesn’t limit you as to when you can watch football games, live-stream videos and other time-sensitive videos.

More information on why you should care about color brightness:

What About the Epson 640 Lamp Life?

A minor downside to having higher lumens with a projector is that you may need to replace your bulbs more often. Projector bulbs can get expensive.

However, the Epson Home Cinema 640 offers an ECO mode, which lets you extend your lamp life from 5,000 hours to 6,000 hours. That’s a significant difference (and savings!).

I like to think about it this way. You can watch a 2-hour video everyday for 6 years and still not have to replace the bulb.

How is the Sound from this Projector?

The Epson 640 does come with a built-in speaker. You can also use your own sound system to create a more enhanced home theater experience.

Do this by connecting speakers to your video equipment (TV, computer, iPad, etc..) rather than the projector itself. More info here.

What Do I Think About the Projector Image Size?

The image size is amazing with this device. You can project images up to 300″ (or 25 feet). If you plan on having movie night outside during the summer against the side of your home, this would be perfect. Alternatively, you can use an entire wall in your home rather than a screen.

If you plan on using your projector in a smaller room but still want the big screen experience, you can do that too. For example, you can project a screen size of 76″ from 8 feet away or 113″ from 12 feet away.

A Note About the Resolution:

Several people have indicated that the resolution (800 x 600) of the Epson Home Cinema 640 is pixelated close-up. Some say they would opt for a full HD resolution on their next purchase and pay the extra few hundred dollars.

This video gives a demonstration of what the visual output looks like on Epson’s previous model (the 3LCD 600) with similar specs:

Is it Easy to Set-Up?

A great advantage that Epson products have is that they are easy to set up. When you take it out of the box, there is minimal work required before you can watch your first movie.

Are you thinking about using your projector in different rooms of your house, in the backyard or even at a friend’s house? This 9 lb device is easy to carry and very portable.

Review of the Panasonic PT AE8000U Projector…

Optoma HD28HDR Home Theater Projector , 3D CompatibleNote: The Panasonic PT projector is currently out of stock, so we suggest checking out the Optoma HD28HDR.

The Optoma is 3D compatible, and it provides an excellent gaming or home cinema experience with bright colors, great picture quality and fast response time. Plus, you can connect it to variety of different devices, and mount it on the ceiling or use it on a table.

Panasonic PT-AE8000U Full HD Projector KitThis Panasonic projector is designed for the ultimate home theater 3D watching experience.

It’s a higher-end model with a larger price tag. Therefore, I recommend it only for people who will appreciate and take advantage of its advanced features. Plus, of course, those who plan on watching 3D movies.

Cool Features of the Panasonic PT AE8000U:

As you can see, this model is really bright and delivers an extremely high contrast ratio. As you’d expect, this projector has incredible color reproduction. Plus, you can customize your viewing experience using the new 3D Viewing Monitor and 3D Picture Balance features.

You can use the PT-AE8000U to turn an entire wall into a movie screen. In addition, this projector can project a large 120″ image from as close as 11.8′ away. This is another nice benefit.

Furthermore, you can position this unit on the ceiling, a wall or a table. Place it where it’s out of the way and convenient for you. This installation flexibility makes this projector much more user friendly because you aren’t limited as to where you can set it up.

Here’s another neat feature. Because many Blu-ray movies have a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, (wider than the projector’s 16:9 aspect ratio), Panasonic’s “Intelligent Lens Memory” will automatically detect and adjust the lens and focus accordingly.

Overview & Review of the Panasonic PT AE8000U Projector:

Get More Information

Earlier, I mentioned the price. This model currently runs about $2400. It definitely costs more than your cheaper $300 or $600 device. However, it’s comparable to the more expensive Sony VPLHW65ES at $4,000 or the Epson 5040UB at $3,000. Keep that in mind as we run through the product details.

Note: I did find a cheaper price for this model here (without the 3D glasses).

Projector Specs:

  • Display: LCD, Full-HD Optimized Lens
  • Brightness: 4,000 or less
  • Brightness: 2,400 lumens
  • Resolution: 1,920 x 1,080
  • Contrast Ratio: 500,000:1
  • Diagonal Screen Size: 40″–200″
  • Dual Integrated 10x Lenses (12x in 2D)
  • Includes 220W Red Rich Lamp

Panasonic has worked closely with Hollywood film makers in producing their projectors. The features and functions can actually get a little overwhelming. Consequently, I found this video better explaining everything (rather than having to read it in print).

1. Panasonic PT-AE8000U HD 3D Home Cinema Projector w/ All Supplied Accessories
2. Panasonic 3D Glasses (2 pairs)

BenQ W1070 DLP HD 1080p Projector Pros & Cons

BenQ W1070 Home Theater Projector Review

The BenQ W1070 Offers a Home Theater Experience on a Budget

Project images up to 200 inches on a wall in your home. Save money on a movie screen if you want. The BenQ features a native 1080p DarkChip3 DLP Technology, has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and provides 2000 lumens of brightness.

You can watch Blu-ray movies, play video games on the big screen and enjoy HD broadcasting all with this $600 unit. The BenQ supports multiple forms of 3D, and you can play video from many devices with HDMI x 2 and multiple connectivity options.

The W1070 is also a short-throw projector, which essentially means that it works well in smaller rooms or tight spaces. You can position the projector closer to the projector screen or wall without negatively impacting the image quality.

CNET reports that this budget-friendly projector offers a good value. However, the picture quality rates “Medium”, and they don’t like the fact that the package doesn’t include 3D glasses. They compare it to the Epson 3020, which offers a comparable value in features and price.

Easy Set-up is a Good Thing

This projector is designed with “easy” in mind. All you need to get started is (1) connect to a power source and (2) connect to a video source. The machine has powerful built-in 10W speakers, so you don’t have to worry about finding an audio source. This is genuinely plug-and-play ready.

What’s Good About SmartEco Technology?

Do you like low maintenance and lower energy costs? The BenQ has lower power consumption built right into the device. In turn, this also leads to less upkeep, servicing and repairs over the lifetime of the projector.

Without sacrificing picture quality, you can use 70% less energy to operate the BenQ. The “SmartEco Mode” on the device allows you to control the light (and energy consumption) while still displaying optimal brightness and contrast. They even have a SmartEco Calculator, which shows you how much energy you are saving.

In addition, the projector shifts to “Eco Blank Mode” if the device is turned on more than 3 minutes without having a display point. This also helps to prevent wasted energy. Thus, you can effortlessly extend the life of your BenQ. Pretty cool, right?

To give you a number, the lamp can last up to 6,000 hours. Depending on how often you use your projector, you may never even need to replace the bulb!

BenQ W1070 Specs:

  • Projector with Full-HD 1080p
  • 3D Support for Blu-ray, video games, and more
  • 2 HDMI Inputs
  • Built-in 10W Speakers
  • Energy-Saving SmartEco Technology
  • Optimized color performance in Day and Night modes
  • Includes Lens Shift Technology
  • Has RGBRGB Color Wheel which give you the best of all worlds (ie. bright greyscale, bright colors, good contrast and balanced image)
